Thai deputy prime minister, army chief visit far South

PATTANI, Jan 19 (TNA) – Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban who supervises security affairs and Army commander-in-chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha visited the violence-plagued far South to inspect the operations of security authorities in the region after the imposition of the emergency decree was lifted in some areas.

Both went to Nong Chik district of Pattani province to give instructions to commanders of units and ad hoc units who supervise security operations in three southern border provinces. Administrative authorities and police also attended the meeting.

Mr Suthep and Gen Prayuth also intended to follow up the operations of security units in the past quarter as the imposition of the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations was lifted in Mae Lan district of Pattani province.

In another development, Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senniam and executives of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) met Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at Government House this morning to propose the restructuring of the centre.

Mr Thaworn said that the restructuring would allow people to participate in the operations of the center through its strategic committee and counseling committee. Representatives of local people can recommend the transfers of the government officials who misbehave or jeopardize security operations out of their areas. Besides, local people can take part in evaluating the implementation of policies and action plans and inquire about the work of government officials. The new regulations of the SBPAC will empower the SBPAC secretary-general to transfer civil servants and police officers up to Level 10 but the authority will not cover public prosecutors, judicial officials and soldiers.

The deputy interior minister admitted there were complaints some government officials were obstructing security operations to protect their vested interest that benefited from security situations in the far South. He said concerned officials were verifying the complaints and monitoring accused officials. (TNA)
