Situation along Thai-Cambodian border remains calm, says Thai authority
BANGKOK, Jan 19 (TNA) - The situation along the Thai-Cambodian border in Thailand's eastern Sa Kaeo Province has remained calm--despite a realignment of troops along the common border to maintain security.
Commanding General of Thailand’s First Army Area Command Lieutenant General Udomdej Sitabutr affirmed on Wednesday (Jan 19) that order has been maintained along the Thai-Cambodian border with usual businesses and public activities.
Lieutenant General Udomdej said, however, that he has instructed Thailand's Burapha Task Force to strictly inspect areas along the border and to intensify their patrols.
In response to Cambodia’s reportedly recent reinforcement of troops along the border, the Thai first army area commander acknowledged that the movement was merely a realignment of troops stationed in the area by the Cambodian side, a practice normally pursued by the Thai side as well.
Meanwhile, the Thai regional commander praised the Thai government for its cautious step-by-step efforts to assist seven Thai nationals arrested by Cambodia on charges of illegal entry, calling for cooperation from Thai activists to refrain from any movement which could worsen the case and other relevant issues. Lieutenant General Udomdej's remarks followed a plan announced by activists of the Thai Patriots Network (TPN) to stage a new rally against Cambodia at a border area on January 25. (TNA)
