Lavrov to attend session of Russo-Turkish strat planning grp.
MOSCOW, January 19 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs
Sergei Lavrov goes to Istanbul for a visit on Wednesday to co-chair the
first session of the Joint Strategic Planning Group (JSPG) together with
his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on January 20.
The JSPG as a floor to discuss matters concerning bilateral
interaction in international affairs was set up in May 2010 as a result of
talks between Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. The
discussion mechanism functions within the framework of the Top-Level
Cooperation Council, which was formed at the same time, and is aimed at
strengthening partnership relations in the political, trade-and-economic,
cultural and humanitarian spheres.
An official at Russia's Foreign Ministry has pointed out,
"Participants in the Istanbul session are planning to exchange views on a
wide range of items that are on the bilateral and international agendas.
The sides will discuss interaction in the fight against extremism and
terrorism, prospects for the formation of a new European security
architecture in the light of the Russian initiative relating to the
adoption of an appropriate treaty, and cooperation in the Black Sea area".
The upcoming discussions will focus on the Cyprus and Middle East
problems, the situation in the Transcaucasus, Iraq, Afghanistan, and
Central Asia. Iran-related problems will not be bypassed either.
A meeting between Catherine Ashton, EU High Commissioner for External
Relations and Security Policy, and Saeed Jalili, Secretary of the IRI
Supreme National Security Council, with the participation of the
political directors of the Six (five Permanent Members of the UN Security
Council and Germany) is scheduled to be held in Istanbul from January 21
to 22. The Russian side will be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister
Sergei Ryabkov.
The participants in the JSPG session are also expected to touch upon
matters connected with the implementation of the agreement on visa-free
regime between Moscow and Ankara.
Work is being also continued on a Russo-Turkish agreement on
readmission. In the process, the sides proceed from the assumption that
the agreement on readmission and on terms for reciprocal travel must enter
into force simultaneously in the two countries. Russian Federation
officials express hope for completion of this work at an earliest date.
