Vaccine production becomes Thailand’s national agenda

BANGKOK, Jan 19 (TNA) - Vaccine production has become Thailand’s national agenda, as the Thai government plans to advance domestic capacities in safeguarding the country against epidemics.

Deputy Government Spokesman Dr. Marut Musajavanich, said that the Thai Cabinet’s approval on Wednesday (Jan 19) of a new four-strategy-master plan on domestic vaccine supply, covering 10 projects in developing Thailand's specialists, certified research bodies and globally-recognised standard and sufficient vaccine production, will gear the country toward a world upgraded vaccine base.

Dr. Marut revealed that the implementation of the new Thai vaccine master plan will be funded by over 5 billion baht budget--sponsored mostly by the Thai government and the Ministry of Public Health and partly by private agencies concerned.

The deputy government spokesman acknowledged that the Thai Cabinet's endorsement of the master plan followed increasing concerns over Thailand’s limited capacity in producing only two vaccines at the moment, namely the BCG for preventing child tuberculosis and the other for preventing encephalitis or severe brain inflammation, resulting in the country's reliance on imported vaccines worth over 3 billion baht annually to maintain its internationally-required immunisation standards.
