India can facilitate nuclear power growth: Kakodkar

New Delhi, Jan 18, IRNA - India can facilitate growth of nuclear power worldwide, particularly in the developing countries, through the use of low enriched Uranium Thorium fuel cycle, said Anil Kakodkar in Mumbai.
'It has been shown that following this approach, the proliferation concerns get considerably diminished, while remaining as efficient in terms of utilisation of uranium.
This can be done with the present day reactor technologies and thus can be readily implemented,' former Chairman of India’s Atomic Energy Commission said on Monday, accepting the INS Homi Bhabha Lifetime Achievement Award, pti reported.
The award, carrying a citation and a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh was presented to Kakodkar by the visiting Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency Yykiya Amano at the 21st annual conference of the Indian Nuclear Society.
Amano also gave away awards to some of the outstanding scientists, engineers and young scientists from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) facilities.
He also presented the INS science communication award to G P Kotiyal of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Swapnesh Kumar Malhotra, head, public awareness division of DAE.
Earlier, inaugurating the 21st Annual Conference of the Indian Nuclear society on 'Impact of Radiation Technology on Human health and Environment,' Amano made a pitch for nuclear power access to developing nations, even as he called for uniform responsibility to prevent nuclear proliferation.
'Many countries considering introducing nuclear power are in the developing world and I welcome this. It should be available to developing countries and they have the same right as developed countries to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and the same responsibility both to ensure the highest safety standards and to prevent nuclear materials from falling into the hands of terrorists,' he said./end
