Thai PM says:Government trying every means to assist 7 Thais

BANGKOK, Jan 18 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has reiterated his government has been trying every possible means to bring the seven Thai detainees back from Cambodia, saying he expected the cases will be finalised soon.

Speaking after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday (Jan 18), Abhisit said the cabinet discussed the cases of the seven Thais who had been arrested by Cambodia allegedly for illegal immigration. The cabinet also acknowledged the report on the bail granted for four Thais by the Cambodian court Tuesday morning.

The prime minister also said he phoned Samdin Lertbutr who was among the four Thai detainees who had just received bail. He quoted Samdin as saying that staffs of the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh took good care of them.

Asked if there was another way to help Veera Somkwamkid who has not received bail in addition to a petition to the Cambodian king, the prime minister said that verdicts on the cases of the seven Thais should be in the pipeline and then his government would consider subsequent actions. He noted that the cases were likely to be finalised soon.

Abhisit said he was not aware of the reason why the bail request of Veera was rejected. He assumed that Veera’s alleged offences were more serious than others’ or Cambodia considered Veera as repeating offences. (TNA)
