Thailand seeking ways to get bail for remaining Thai detainee in Cambodia

BANGKOK, Jan 18 (TNA) - Thailand is seeking ways to secure release on bail for the remaining Thai national detained in Cambodia, Veera Somkwamkid, after six other Thai detainees have all been granted bail by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.
Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thani Thongphakdi acknowledged the coordinated move of all parties concerned in Thailand, saying Thai lawyers are discussing with the Cambodian court on Veera's case, including any possibility of fighting the case in Cambodia's higher court; if yes, the Thai lawyers will swiftly proceed in accordance with Cambodia's legal steps to secure Veera's release as soon as possible.
Thani, who is also Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Information, noted that the Cambodian court's ruling was based on its deliberation of recent testimonies of all the seven Thai detainees individually. He affirmed the foreign ministry is trying its best to assist Veera.
Veera has remained at Prey Sor Prison in Phnom Penh; while the other six Thai nationals who have been freed on bail are now residing at the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh.
Thani said the Cambodian court has not set the date for further trial against the seven Thai citizens, but he expects a new development of the case over the next couple of days.
All the seven Thais, including a Bangkok MP of Thailand's ruling Democrat Party, Panich Vikitsreth, were arrested by Cambodian soldiers in an area along the Thai-Cambodian border on December 29 on charges of illegally entering into the Cambodian territory and intruding onto a Cambodian military zone.
Veera and his secretary, Ratree Pipattanapaiboon were additionally charged with espionage. Ratree was, however, among the four more Thai nationals who were granted bail by the Cambodian court this morning. (TNA)
