Four more Thai detainees in Phnom Penh released on bail

BANGKOK, Jan 18 (TNA) - Four more Thai detainees in Phnom Penh were released on bail by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court Tuesday morning (Jan 18)--on the condition that they must stay in Cambodia pending their trial.

But the Cambodian Court denied bail for Veera Somkwamkid, a leading activist of the Thai Patriots Network, aligned with the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), citing a serious charge of spying against him as a reason.

Veera, the four Thai people who were freed on bail this morning and two other Thai nationals, including a Bangkok MP of the ruling Democrat Party, Panich Vikitsreth, who were earlier released on bail, were arrested by Cambodian soldiers in an area along the Thai-Cambodian border on December 29 on charges of illegally entering into the Cambodian territory and intruding into a Cambodian military zone.

But Veera and his secretary, Ratree Pipattanapaiboonwere additional charged with espionage. Ratree was, however, among four more Thai nationals who were granted bail by the Cambodian court this morning.

All the six Thai nationals who were freed on bail are now residing at the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. The date for their trial has not yet been announced.

Meanwhile, Veera said he will appeal the Cambodian court's ruling, vowing to fight the case to the end. The leading Thai activist insisted that the area where he was arrest is the Thai territory.

Supporters of Veera's Thai Patriots Network announced once acknowledging the Cambodian Court's ruling that they would prolong their rally at Government House in Bangkok until Thailand's present Democrat Party-led government stepped down. The Thai Patriots Network activists have deplored the Thai government for its failure to secure the release on bail for Veera. (TNA)
