Cold Chisel drummer passes away

The Cold Chisel bandmates of rock drummer and songwriter Steve Prestwich say they
are shattered by his death.
Prestwich passed away on Sunday afternoon, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour
less than two weeks ago, a notice posted on the band's website said.
He never regained consciousness after undergoing an operation last Friday.
"Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Phil Small and Don Walker are shattered by the loss," the
band's website said.
"All of our thoughts are with Steve's loved ones at this difficult time."
The death of Prestwich, 56, comes after the weekend passing of Sherbet guitarist
Harvey James, 58, who had been suffering from lung cancer.
Both Cold Chisel and Sherbet were highly influential in the Australian music scene
in the 1970s and 1980s and each was responsible for some of the nation's best loved
songs.
Prestwich was born in Liverpool, England and was the oldest of seven brothers,
according to the website.
He played his first gig, for which he was paid two pounds, at age 11 at the Everton
Soccer Support Club in 1965, and put the money toward buying a drum kit.
After emigrating to Australia in 1971, he settled in Adelaide where he came into
contact with Barnes and his older brother John Swan before joining Cold Chisel in
1973.
He co-wrote and wrote some of Cold Chisel's greatest hits, including Forever Now,
When The War is Over and Flame Trees (with Don Walker).
Prestwich also played with Little River Band after Cold Chisel first disbanded in
1984, before rejoining the band when it reformed in 1997.
His debut solo album, Since You've Been Gone, was released in August 2000.
