Thailand to hold first-ever election for "Farmers' Council"

BANGKOK, Jan 17 (TNA) - Thailand’s Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry will hold the country’s first-ever election for its new Farmers' Council next month.

Chalermporn Phirunsarn, Thailand's Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives, said on Monday (Jan 17) that the first nationwide election of the Thai Farmers Councilors will be held on February 13.

In case of Bangkok, Chalermporn acknowledged, all parties concerned, including officials of the capital's all 50 district offices, community leaders and local police, are being provided with information to facilitate their support for the first-ever poll of its kind in Thailand--following the promulgation of a new bill on the establishment of the Thai Farmers' Council for the first time on November 20 last year.

Chalermporn revealed that candidacy registrations for the maiden election in Thailand are scheduled for January 19-23.

According to the senior Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives official, the new Thai Farmers' Council will protect and uphold local farmers' rights in producing, processing and marketing farm produce, paving the way for Thailand's developed and systematic agricultural management with upgraded quality of life of Thai farmers in the future.(TNA)
