Soltaniyeh: Iran to start talks only if there are no preconditions

Tehran, Jan 17, IRNA – Iran’s Representative in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali Akbar Soltaniyeh said Iran will start negotiations only when there are no preconditions.
Talking to IRNA about the upcoming talks between Iran and the 5+1 in Istanbul, he stressed that Iran has always favored talks and dialogue for the main reason that such an attitude is based on the country’s thousands-year-old and Islamic culture which persuades officials to settle differences through dialogue and mutual respect.
He said though Iran had always followed a logical route and invited all to negotiation, some countries adopted a policy of confrontation with their dealings with Iran.
He said the most important thing was not the negotiation in itself but the atmosphere prevailing the negotiations, and the principles on which the talks are based.
Soltaniyeh said as such Iran will sit for talks only when there are no preconditions for it.
Saying that all participants in talks should enjoy equal rights, he added that his very important message to the world was that when Iran sits down for talks with any country the basic point is that it sees itself as an absolute equal to other 5 nuclear participants with the only difference that Iran has no nuclear weapons and stands in sharp contrast with them in terms of its beliefs and principles.
Iran’s IAEA representative further stressed that Iran was ready to talk and cooperate with other countries including big powers in solving regional and international issues including the regional security, world-scale issues, economic affairs, energy security, peaceful implementation of nuclear energy, anti-narcotics operations and any other possible issue that the world needs to be solved.
As for the negative propaganda by certain foreign countries about Iran’s nuclear activities, he said the western countries had been carrying a propaganda campaign against Iran’s nuclear facilities in Arak, saying that it was a totally secret project which carried out underground activities while the plant was quite visible from kilometers away and everything about it was quite transparent.
Now, he added, the representatives of 120 world countries have visited the site and seen for themselves that its activities are quite transparent and served peaceful purposes especially now that the output of its activities is a radio-isotope which has a medical use./end
