Thai PM vows to lift emergency decree in more areas in deep South

PATTANI, Jan 17 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced on Monday (Jan 17) that his government will lift the emergency decree in more areas in the country's deep South, replacing it with ordinary law enforcements.
The Thai premier also vowed during his visit to Mae Lan District of Thailand's southernmost Pattani this morning that his Democrat-led administration will go ahead with its determined attempts to bring peace and order back to the troubled southern border region--where the martial law was first lifted in four districts in Songkhla Province, adjacent to three insurgency-plagued far southern Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani--now that political and economic woes in the country have relieved.
According to a Thai Cabinet resolution issued on December 28 last year, Pattani's Mae Lan District was the first area in Thailand's restive South where the emergency decree was lifted.
Abhisit said he considered the revocation of the state of emergency in Mae Lan was a "significant change" in the troubled deep South over the past five years--aimed to facilitate and promote normal living and better quality of life of local people, insisting that his government will carry on its peaceful strategic policy on giving the priority to "politics before military" when handling problems in the deep South.
The Thai prime minister noted that the government-appointed Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC) has become a spearheaded agency to foster development and unity in the southern Thai border region--complying with the government's policy on urgently-effective re-management of the far South.
Abhisit, however, urged all parties concerned to cooperate with the government in returning peace to the violence-plagued southern border region--where his administration's individual household-oriented assistance policy is being deeply implemented for the first time.
During his brief inspection trip to Pattani earlier in the day, the Thai leader also presided a ceremony to transfer a state fund of 512.54 million baht to a village bank account, to finance local development projects of nearly 2,250 villages in 44 districts of Thailand's five southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun and Songkhla, each village eligible for 228,000 baht.
