LOMBOK,INDONESIA, Jan 16 (TNA)– Arriving on this Indonesian island for an ASEAN foreign meeting event after a three-day visit to Timor-Leste, Thailand’s Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said that the UN mission in Dili has praised the work of Thai police officers providing peacekeeping and security services in the world’s youngest democracy.
Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya visited the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste's (UNMIT) headquarters in Dili on Saturday where he met Ameerah Haq,the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Timor-Leste, who heads UNMIT, and UN police in Timor-Leste (UNPOL) officials during his first official trip to Dili, which began Thursday.
Mr Kasit met President José Ramos–Horta, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, and President of Parliament Fernando de Araújo, as well as his Timorese counterpart, Zacarias Albano da Costa. Bilateral cooperation in technical assistance, fisheries, education and energy, and Timor-Leste’s future entry into ASEAN were discussed.
The Thai foreign minister reaffirmed Thailand’s role as a donor country and active contributor in the UN mission with the hope of achieving economic and social stability in the Southeast Asian neighbour. A meeting of donor countries for Timor-Leste will be held soon to coordinate international assistance effectively.
Mr Kasit said the UN police agency expressed gratitude regarding Thai police officers commissioned in Timor-Leste for their professionalism, reliability and courage. This echoed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon’s willingness conveyed to Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva that the UN is seeking service of about 300-400 female police and peacekeeping officers for the UN missions worldwide.
After ending his Timor-Leste visit, Mr Kasit arrived at Lombok Island, Indonesia, for the second part of his current trip where he joins other ASEAN foreign ministers for a ministerial meeting retreat.(TNA)
