Thai PM promises to improve Thai teachers’ quality and welfare

BANGKOK, Jan 16 (TNA) - On the occasion of the National Teachers’ Day in Thailand Sunday (Jan 16), Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva promised to improve the quality and welfare of teachers nationwide, saying that his government will propose a law governing teachers’ salaries to the House of Representatives late this month and he hopes that the House will pass it within the upcoming session.
During his weekly talk programme Sunday, Abhisit declared 2011 the year of teachers’ quality. He said the factor that decided the reform or improvement of educational systems overseas was the quality of teachers and the urgent problem that the government would have to solve was the very heavy burdens of Thai teachers in terms of the ratio of students to teachers, their teaching hours and the considerable tasks that were not directly related to teaching.
Abhisit said that such problems were serious and he promised to continuously push for solutions this year.
The prime minister added the measures that his government had already launched including a project to return teachers to students, the improvement of the evaluation of teachers’ academic standings and promotions for capable teachers would set directions for the improvement of teachers.
Abhisit said when the ordinary House session begins late this month, the government will propose the teachers’ salary law to the Lower House and he hopes that the House will approve it within this session. (TNA)
