Thailand pays tribute to teachers on National Teachers’ Day
BANGKOK, Jan 16 (TNA) - Thailand marked the National Teachers’ Day on Sunday with the government announcing to improve teachers’ quality and the educational system and relieve the burdens of Thai teachers as statistics show that they bear heavier workloads than their colleagues overseas.
Thai Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat presided over a ceremony to give alms to 99 Buddhist monks on the field in front of his ministry on the occasion of the National Teachers’ Day Sunday morning. A number of executives of the Teachers’ Council, the Professional Standards Commission and the Teachers’ Day Organizing Sub-committee, as well as school executives and personnel and the general public attended the ceremony to pay tribute to teachers.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, meanwhile, participated in another event to mark the National Teachers’ Day at the auditorium of the Teachers’ Council. The premier announced that his government would continuously improve the quality of educational services and teachers and give them moral support. The government will also increase the number of teachers to suit the number of students nationwide and modernise teaching technologies for the sake of an efficient educational system and teaching quality.
The prime minister said he would relieve the burdens of teachers in line with international standard. For example, there should be 15-25 students in a classroom instead of 36 students at present. Besides, statistics show that Thai teachers teach 925-1,100 hours a year while overseas teachers teach 548-818 hours annually.
The prime minister also presented awards to 160 outstanding teachers in many areas.
Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration organised its National Teachers’ Day event at the Bangkok Youth Center in the capital city.
Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatara presided over the event that included a ceremony to pay tribute to retiring and senior teachers.
The Bangkok governor said that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration realised the importance of teachers and was continuously boosting their morale. It enables teachers to further their education. This includes the annual presentation of 90 scholarships for teachers to pursue their master’s degrees, training sessions to promote teachers’ academic standings, the construction of 4,000 more housing units for teachers and the provision of soft loans especially for teachers. All the projects are aimed at enabling teachers of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to develop the capital into a metropolis of learning. (TNA)
