Majlis speaker denounces US approach towards Tunisia

Tehran, Jan 16, IRNA – The way western states, particularly US, reacted to latest developments in Tunisia was “ridiculous”, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Ali Larijani said Sunday.

Larijani made the remarks during his address to the opening session of Majlis this morning.

He believed that the West and the US were behind repression and pressures imposed on the people of Tunisia under the rule of its former president, Ben Ali who fled to Saudi Arabia following weeks of public protests against poverty, unemployment and repression.

Ben Ali, ruled Tunisia for more than 23 years.

“Those who are the root cause of dictatorship and pressure in Tunisia are now pretending that they are sympathizing with the Tunisian nation,” Larijani said.

He urged regional states “to be more vigilant” regarding the ongoing regional and international developments.

The speaker also warned Tunisian people against efforts of certain countries that despite supporting former regime of Tunisia, are now trying to impose their own will and take advantage of the current situation in that country./end
