ABDULLAH URGES WIVES OF BN ELECTED REPS NOT TO NEGLECT PEOPLE'S INTERESTS
KUCHING, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has called on wives of ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representatives to continue serving the people even in the opposition Pakatan Rakyat-controlled states.
Abdullah said under the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy
Ministers (Bakti), they must continue complementing their husband's
responsibilities by serving the people and helping them regardless of race and
religion.
"I hope Bakti members will continue to be active even in states controlled
by the opposition as serving the community is a noble act," he said in his
speech at the annual programme of wives of BN elected representatives held at
the Sarawak State Assembly building here Tuesday night.
He said no matter what the problems or challenges, their community work
must continue and not postponed or shelved.
They could even continue to serve the people even after their husbands no
longer held ministerial positions, he added.
Bakti president Jeanne Abdullah said wives of BN elected representatives
needed to go to the ground, to the villages and experience for
themselves the people's way of life in these places.
She said this would make them realise and strive for something to be done
to help the community.
"Their role has become more challenging now. They are not just to accompany
their husband or be the guest-of-honour at a function, but also be proactive in
monitoring the situation in their husband's constituency," she said.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud said he was overwhelmed
by the fact that the country's five prime ministers so far, had never neglected
the welfare of the people of Sarawak although separated by the (South China)
sea.
"I feel hurt when certain quarters are prepared to claim that some of
Sarawak's political leaders will cross over to another party just to gain
position. We in Sarawak cannot be bought with our eyes closed and we do not
forget the BN's good deeds," he said.
