Five envoys to IAEA touring Arak site on behalf of 130 countries

Arak, Markazi prov, Jan 16, IRNA -- Ambassadors of five countries to the UN nuclear watchdog arrived in this provincial capital city Saturday to explore Iran’s nuclear facilities on behalf of 130 world states.

Envoys of Egypt and Cuba to the International Atomic Energy Agency have included the five diplomats who are visiting Arak, some 260 km southwestern Tehran.

The Egyptian and Cuban ambassadors are representing 130 countries of the Non-Aligned Movement to the IAEA. The Egyptian envoy is also representing the Group 77 as Cairo is currently presiding the group.

In the meantime, the permanent representative of Oman at the IAEA is the third foreign diplomat visiting the Arak heavy water site as Oman is presiding the Arab League.

The Syrian ambassador to the IAEA, who is representing the Arab League at the IAEA, has also included in the delegation.

The five diplomats are scheduled to visit Iran’s nuclear facilities in Arak (in Markazi province) and Natanz (in Isfahan province) during a two-day visit.

The representative of Venezuela at the IAEA is also accompanying the delegation as a “special guest.”

The diplomats whose countries are all members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived in Iran Saturday morning upon the invitation of the Iranian government.

Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh told IRNA that member states of the NAM and G77 have welcomed Iran’s initiative of inviting foreign states to visit its nuclear facilities as a proof of Tehran’s policy of transparency in nuclear program.

Soltanieh further pointed out that a similar visit took place in 2007 Isfahan when the representatives visited the Uranium Conversion Facility in Isfahan.

He said that Iran invited representatives of the IAEA member states including the European Union to join the majority of world countries who are sending their representatives to Iran but they failed to make use of this historical opportunity to closely observe Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities.

However, he noted, Iran respected the decision of these countries not to participate in the visit.

Natanz and Arak nuclear sites are two major nuclear facilities of Iran which are under heavy propaganda fuss of Western media./end
