Thailand-Timor Leste forge closer ties

BANGKOK, Jan 15 (TNA) - Thailand is deepening bilateral relations with Timor-Leste through proposed plans on fostering closer economic cooperation--which will open more offshore business opportunities for Thai firms.

Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, who is paying his first visit to Timor Leste since assuming his office in 2009, was quoted as saying by a TNA reporter on Saturday (Jan 15) that his meeting with Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta included discussions on both countries' past experiences in administering economic and democratic development, and the prospect of materialising further economic cooperation between the two countries in the future with expanding two-way trade and investment opportunities.

Kasit acknowledged that, in terms of facilitating the growing bilateral cooperation, Thailand is planning to organise an investment seminar for the Timorese government in Bangkok, during which business opportunities in Timor-Leste can be presented to Thai entrepreneurs and investors. According to the Thai foreign minister, the new-born Timorese economy is welcoming a variety of foreign investment projects.

The Thai Foreign Minister said that he had also conveyed Thailand’s full-support on the building of public infrastructure in Timor-Leste and the newly-independent country's bid for joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as the newest member. (TNA)
