Thai PM vows teacher development on National Teacher’s Day

BANGKOK, Jan 15 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva marked the National Teacher’s Day, which falls on January 16, with a public declaration for his government's dedication to further development of Thai teachers and the country's education sector through a national education reform plan covering standardising of local teachers and improving their qualifications and welfare benefits.
The Thai prime minister said in a keynote speech on “teacher development” marking the National Teacher's Day 2011 tomorrow that his government plans, among others, to upgrade Thai teachers' quality to meet international standards based on a newly-promulgated bill strictly requiring high qualifications of local teachers and sufficient salaries and welfare benefits for them, to boost not only their morale, but also Thailand's recognised education standards.
Abhisit acknowledged that his Democrat Party-led administration will also produce more teachers at all levels to address a national problem of teacher shortages, along with a review in curricula to cope with the changing domestic and international situation. (TNA)
