PRESIDENT GETS AU FAIT WITH "CLEAN AIR" PROJECT
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ On Thursday, the President Ts.Elbegdorj got acquainted with the “Clean air” project implemented by the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).
He has visited a model ger (national dwelling) of the MCA located in the 12th khoroo (the smallest administrative unit in Ulaanbaatar), Chingeltei district. According to a director of the MCA S.Bayarbaatar, the “Clean air” project has been realized by the MCA from 2010 in respect of a proposal of Mongolia's government to reduce air pollution by providing ger areas' people with energy-saving dwellings and products.
In the first turn, warm covering for gers were given. “We are looking for possibilities of living in a warm ger without paying big monet for this. Some about seven thousand families have got the warm covering so far. Thanks to it, they can save expense for coal/logs by 30 per cent,” S.Bayarbaatar has said. The project is ready to beging selling a new brand of ovens produced in Turkey. It is expected that the price will be same of ordinary ovens, he added.
After this, the President met inhabitants of the 12th khoroo to share opinions on reducing air pollution. The gathered have underlined that declining the price of electricity would be the most effective way to reduce air pollution. "Instead of burning coal or logs many families use electric heaters but are afraid of using it always because of high prices of electricity," they explained.
Saying that the pollution has reached a disaster level, the President has emphasized that urgent actions are needed. “It is time to implement projects and programs that are aimed at creating new energy sources, improving sub-power stations and electric lines, reducing electricity prices, banning raw coal burning," he has stressed. “The National Security Council will discuss this issue without delay, and will pass a special decision soon," Elbegdorj has said.
The President was accompanied by G. Batkhuu, Deputy Speaker of the State Great Khural; heads of parliamentary factions D.Lundeejantsan and Ch. Saikhanbileg; S. Bayartsogt, Minister of Finance; D.Zorigt, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy; L.Gansukh, Minister of Environment and Tourism; S.Lambaa, Minister of Health; heads of several Standing committees; MPs; D.Battulga, head of the Presidential Office; advisors to the President, and others.
The State Head will continue his visits to the most polluted areas.
