Remaining five Thai detainees in Cambodia denied bail

BANGKOK, Jan 14 (TNA) - The Cambodian court rejected on Friday (Jan 14) a request for release on bail for remaining five Thai detainees in Phnom Penh without giving any reason--after approving one-million-riel-bail (10,000 baht) each for two out of the seven Thai nationals who were arrested by Cambodian soldiers in a border area on December 29 for allegedly illegal trespassing onto the Cambodian soil.
Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thani Thongphakdi confirmed the latest development on the case, citing a report from the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. Thani, who is also Director-General of the ministry's Department of Information, said, however, that Thai lawyers have already filed an appeal with the Phnom Penh court with a result expected by next week.
Meanwhile, Chavanont Intarakomalyasut, Secretary to Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, said that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has been reported of the Cambodian court's decision.
Supporters of the Thai Patriots Network, aligned with the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), have continued rallying at gate No.4 of Government House in Bangkok to press for the government's effective action to assist the seven Thais; while Thai Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul said he has ordered the governor of the eastern Thai Sa Kaeo Province to be on alert, as the Thai Patriots Network activists planned to rally in a border area in the province. Chavarat called on the protestors to cancel their planned demonstration. (TNA)
