Thai FM urges Cambodia to speed up legal process on 7 Thai detainees

TIMOR LESTE, Jan 14 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya has urged Cambodian authorities to speed up legal process against seven Thai nationals arrested and detained in Cambodia for allegedly illegal entering into the Cambodian territory and to go ahead with fostering bilateral ties cooperation for mutual benefits.
Kasit, who is paying an official visit to Timor Leste from January 13-14, his first trip to the newest independent nation in Southeast Asia since assuming his post, gave the comment after two of the seven Thai detainees were granted bail by the Cambodian Court yesterday (Jan 13).
The Thai foreign minister noted that the case is not a matter of serious crime, and that Thailand has clarified everything with hope for a swift settlement on the case.
Kasit said, however, that the case of the seven Thais should not affect bilateral ties and cooperation between Bangkok and Phnom Penh, as, over the past 3-4 months, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had met with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen four times, resulting in more understanding and closer contacts between the two neighbouring countries.
