Thai consumer confidence index unexpectedly gains a hike

BANGKOK, Jan 13 (TNA) - Thailand’s consumer confidence index hiked for the first time in 3 months, as domestic expenditure gradually regains momentum for an early economic recovery this year.

Economic and Business Forecasting Centre Director at the Thai Chamber of Commerce University, Thanawat Polvichai, said the overall consumer confidence index rose from 70.3 points last November to 71.9 in December, with forecast for the next six months increased from 78.8 points to 80.8, respectively, and employment rates climbing from 70.5 to 72—the rise in figures since the onset of October flashfloods last year.

Thanawat said that with recent increases to the national wage limit as well as agricultural product prices, the rising domestic expenditure had still remained below the normal level, and that consumers should spend wisely in the first quarter of this year as increasing raw material costs and inflation may result in price instabilities.
