Thai Foreign Minister insists on continuous efforts to help 7 Thais in Cambodia

BANGKOK, Jan 13 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya hopes the Cambodian court will release all the 7 Thais. He insists on continuous efforts to help them and will meet his Cambodian counterpart in Indonesia mid this month.
In response to the Cambodian court granting bail to Democrat MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth and Mrs Naruemol Jitwaratana who are among the 7 Thai detainees prosecuted in Cambodia, Kasit said he hoped all the Thai people would receive bail. The Thai embassy in Phnom Penh and its lawyers are trying to arrange for the bail as soon as possible.
The foreign minister noted the Foreign Affairs Ministry is doing its best to help the 7 Thais without any discrimination. There have been attempts to reach contacts through many channels, both formal and informal, since the first day of the incident. Lawyers have been working on the case as well. Everyone would like the case to be settled and relations to progress because Thailand and Cambodia have so many other mechanisms and missions to do together.
Kasit said Thailand was taking actions to improve atmosphere between both countries in the way that could ensure help for the 7 Thai citizens. They include the release of Cambodians earlier detained at the Immigration Bureau.
According to the foreign minister, Mr Asada Chai-nam, the Thai head of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission, made some progress on the issue of the 7 Thais during his recent trip to introduce himself to Cambodia. There will be a bilateral meeting in the near future in relation to technical cooperation through the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency.
Besides, Kasit said he would meet Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Hor Namhong in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Retreat in Indonesia on January 15-17.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said his government sought bail for all the 7 Thais without any discrimination. He said the government was studying how the Cambodian court made its judgments and was waiting for a judgment on the case of the 7 Thai people. (TNA)
