PM visits and listens to flood affected
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has spent another day in Queensland, visiting
flood-affected regions and taking time to listen to those impacted by the state's
worst natural disaster.
On Thursday afternoon, Ms Gillard continued her tour in Brisbane, listening to story
after story from those who've found themselves homeless.
Some at the QEII evacuation centre lined up for photos and congratulated her
handling of the crisis.
As she accepted a free feed at a sausage sizzle at the centre, children showed her
their painted faces before running away to play.
Truck driver Paul Austin, whose Rocklea home has gone under, offered the PM a beer
at his temporary home in the centre's car park - the back of a semi-trailer.
"I've never really liked prime ministers," he said afterwards.
"I mean I've never really liked politics, but she's done a great job."
Ms Gillard said she'd heard some heart-wrenching stories, but that she'd seen the
best in people on Thursday's tour.
"I have to say that the overwhelming impression is that people are facing all of
this with a smile on their face when they've suffered such devastation," she told
AAP.
"It really takes your breath away that people can be so courageous."
Ms Gillard said it was important she heard people's stories.
"It's just a way of me personally giving them reassurance that the whole nation's
thinking of them," she said.
It was also a way of ensuring the government was doing the best possible job of
giving people what they needed, she said.
