Cambodian court grants bail to two of seven Thai people

PHNOM PENH, Jan 13 (TNA) - The Cambodian court on Thursday (Jan 13) granted bail to Thailand’s Democrat MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth and Mrs Naruemol Cheewaratana who are among the seven Thais detained in Phnom Penh allegedly for trespassing on Cambodian territory.

The bail was granted on three conditions. They are prohibited from leaving the country, must post bail of 1 million riel (10,000 baht), and report to the Cambodian court immediately when they are summoned.

Both already left the Prey Sar prison and went to their accommodation in Phnom Penh.

Chavanond Intarakomalsut, secretary to the Thai foreign affairs minister, said that both persons could not return to Thailand for the time being because they were in the process of their defence on two charges that were illegal immigration and trespass on a military compound.

In the meantime, there is not a report about the possibility of bail for the other five Thai detainees.

Meanwhile, the situation at border passes in Aranyaprathet district of Thailand’s eastern Sa Kaeo province remains normal. Border passes are still open. However, immigration police of Sa Kaeo estimate that the number of Cambodian visitors there should drop by 30% Thursday. Cambodian traders said that their colleagues in Poipet were afraid that Thailand might close its border passes. (TNA)
