Dalby's flood peak lower than expected
Residents of drenched Dalby were granted a reprieve on Wednesday when the Myall
Creek failed to reach its expected peak.
Western Downs Mayor Ray Brown said the Myall Creek peaked on Tuesday night at 3.49
metres, and that it looked unlikely to push above the predicted top of 3.8 metres.
"It is pleasing that the water did not reach the peak we first feared, however we
must keep in mind that a lot of houses still got inundated at this level," he said.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has forecast that water levels in the creek would
start to fall on Wednesday.
Two hundred evacuees are currently at evacuation centres set up in the town in
southern Queensland.
Petrol stations in Dalby have been ordered by the local Disaster Coordination Group
to lock their pumps, with fuel now available only for emergency operations.
Residents remain on strict water restrictions and are being advised to conserve
water over concerns infrastructure might be affected by floodwaters.
In nearby Chinchilla, residents are also again on flood watch as Charleys Creek
continues to rise at 7 metres.
It's expected to exceed the record peak level at Christmas of 8 metres late on
Wednesday.
The flood water level in the township of Condamine is also rising and expecting to
reach a new peak of 13 metres on Thursday before hitting a top of 14.8 metres over
the weekend.
Chinchilla residents are being advised to boil their drinking water after e-coli was
detected in the supply.
Condamine residents are also advised to boil their water until the supply can be
properly assessed.
