Thailand bidding to host 2020 World Expo

BANGKOK, Jan 12 (TNA) - Thailand has potential to host the World Expo 2020 and Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has announced that the Kingdom will bid for the host of world event over the next decade.

Vincente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary General of the Bureau International des Exposition (BIE), who is on an official visit to Thailand, also made the same assessment, pointing out Thailand's prime geographical location as a regional hub, modern infrastructure, cultural uniqueness, experience in organising international events and capacity to welcome exhibition visitors as supportive factors.

Nevertheless, he cautioned, Thailand is still facing tough challenges ahead, including securing the majority vote of support from the international community--against other rival countries, namely Turkey, Brazil, Qatar, Egypt and Russia.

During his ongoing visit to the kingdom, Loscertales was set to survey three Thai sites in Ayutthaya, Chonburi and Chiang Mai to look into their potential to host the world mega event and to meet high-ranking Thai government officials, including Premier Abhisit, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya and Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij.
