Iran MP urges Ashton act as international figure

Tehran, Jan 22, IRNA – A senior member of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Wednesday suggested to EU Foreign Affairs Chief Catherine Ashton to act like an international figure and stop making hasty and undiplomatic statements.

Rapporteur of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali made the remarks commenting on Ashton's latest statements during which she has asked Iran to repeal the sentence of a jailed Iranian convicted of acting against the Islamic Republic's establishment.

Speaking to IRNA, Jalali said making such comments ahead of the next round of Iran's talks with the Group 5+1 member states, was a 'hasty and undiplomatic' act.

He stressed that what Ashton did was in fact an example of 'interfering in Iran's internal affairs.'

The next round of talks between Iran and permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany is to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, on January 21-22.

'As an official who is to attend a sensitive talks with Iran in a near future, Ms. Ashton is expected to take an unbiased position vis-à-vis Iran,' Jalali said.

He added, 'Making such irresponsible statements would damage the course of mutual understanding' between the two sides.

Jalali further suggested to Ashton to 'stop acting like journalists' and prevent making further hasty and undiplomatic statements./end
