Thai government to freeze goods prices until March

BANGKOK, Jan 12 (TNA) - The Thai government announced on Wednesday (Jan 12) that it will not allow any price hike of consumer products by local manufacturers until March this year to ease people's burden on rising costs of living.

Watcharee Wimuktayont, Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Internal Trade, confirmed the price freezing policy, saying that her department will not approve any proposed price rise by local producers or suppliers over the next two months, and that several local producers of consumer goods have already agreed to freeze their product prices until March.

The government's latest move followed the Thai Cabinet's endorsement of a package of nine social welfare measures yesterday, as part of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's people's development policy, including low-interest loans for taxi drivers, food vendors and farmers; free electricity for minimal monthly use of no more than 90 units per household; a cap of 30 baht per liter on diesel fuel, free education to local students and extended social security benefits to millions of low-income Thais.

Meanwhile, the Thai Ministry of Finance projected that the Thai economy should grow by 4.5 per cent this year--on top of its 8 per cent growth last year. (TNA)
