Thailand to soon become world’s 10th largest auto production base

BANGKOK, Jan 12 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Industry says it is confident that Thailand will become the world’s 10th largest automobile manufacturing base within this year, up from its present status as the world's 12th biggest auto production hub.
Thai Industry Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat acknowledged that Thailand should achieve the goal in 2011 if there were no further fluctuations in the world economy, as most automobiles produced in Thailand are exported.
According to official statistics, Thailand produced about 1.63 million vehicles last year, out of the country's total auto production capacity of two million units. Thailand's auto production capacity is rising to 2.6 million units this year, but the Thailand Automotive Institute said that the country's real production of vehicles should stand around two million units in 2011.
The Thai industry minister noted that a change in vehicular taxes over the next few months will not affect the Thai auto industry as it has already received promotional privileges from the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), and that Thailand is promoting more use of electric vehicles, but the Kingdom will not promote local production of the electric cars until their technologies, especially battery technologies, are fully-developed to avoid impacts from rapidly-changing core technologies of the advance vehicles.
