Switzerland never backs sanctions on Iran: Swiss deputy FM

Tehran, Jan 12, IRNA -- Swiss Deputy Foreign Minister Peter Maurer said in Tehran on Tuesday that Switzerland never backs sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs Ali Ahani, Maurer discussed issues of mutual interests.

The two deputy foreign ministers reviewed mutual, regional as well as international developments.

Highlighting the existing potentials, Ahani said Iran welcomes expansion of cooperation with Switzerland.

Ahani criticized the western states for adopting selective approach to respect Non-Proliferation Treaty, a reference to practice of the nuclear weapons states to upgrade stockpiles of Weapons of Mass Destruction rather than dismantle them in line with the Global Disarmament Treaty.

Ahani said that the US and the European Union sought to impose sanctions on Iran in a bid to prevent the country’s progress and economic development, but to no avail.

He also derided the western governments for their dual approach toward the international campaign against terrorism and called for tight cooperation between European states and Switzerland in this respect.

The Swiss deputy foreign minister expressed condolence on deaths of Iranians caused by air disaster.

Referring to significant status of Iran in regional and international developments, he called for expansion of cooperation between the two countries.

Switzerland is ready to bolster and deepen cultural relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and also strongly condemned the terrorist action of bombing a mosque in the east of the country and expressed condolence to the bereaved families.

He said that Switzerland is ready to cooperate with Iran in the international campaign against terrorism, adding that the responsibility of the international community to deal with such heinous phenomena is of prime importance./end
