US to be asked to remove Thailand from PWL

BANGKOK, Jan 10 (TNA) - Thailand's Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot is scheduled to visit the United States and meet the US Trade Representative (USTR) next month to seek Washington's removal of Thailand from its Priority Watch List (PWL) for concerns over pirated products.

Thailand is trying to free itself from the PWL imposed under the 301 Provision of the US Trade Act, as the Kingdom has been in PWL since 2007. Alongkorn's planned trip to the United States coincides with Washington's move for a special review of countries put on its PWL.

Alongkorn said on Monday (Jan 10) that Thailand has concretely cracked down pirated products and the action should justify its removal from the United States' PWL, noting Thailand would become more attractive to international investors and recognised for its efforts to protect intellectual property if removed from the PWL and was put on Washington's Watch List (WL) instead.

Alongkorn revealed that he would also meet representatives of the US private sector to discuss the development of the creative economy and privileges under the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP)--which Thailand should be approved to boost bilateral trade between the Thai and the US economies in the future.
