Thailand gathering public opinions on a national scientific development plan

BANGKOK, Jan 10 (TNA) - Thailand’s Ministry of Science and Technology on Monday (Jan 10) organised a scientific assembly to gather public opinions on the country’s first scientific and technological development and innovation plan.
Representatives of farmers, community enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises, the civil sector, researchers and the general public gathered to hear details of the 1st scientific and technological development and innovation plan that the Ministry of Science and Technology has drafted for implementation in the next decade from 2012 to 2021. The plan is intended to enhance national capabilities and meet the needs of all groups of people.
Veerachai Veerametheekul, the Minister of Science and Technology, said Thailand would have to promote the patent innovations which were national assets. The new plan would apply science to solve the problems of most people. It is aimed at promoting economic, social and human resource development.
Within ten years, according to the minister, research and development budgets will increase from 0.2 percent to 2 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). The number of full-time researchers will rise from 6-7 researchers per 10,000 people to 25 researchers per 10,000 people. The ratio of researches in the private sector to those in the government sector will change from 40:60 to 70:30.
Veerachai said the Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to sound out public opinions on the scientific development plan and it will propose the plan to the cabinet when it reaches a consensus on it. (TNA)
