Thai government follows legal procedures to help 7 Thais in Cambodia

BANGKOK, Jan 10 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Monday (Jan 10) the government was following legal procedures and trying every possible means to help seven Thai nationals detained in Phnom Penh after being arrested for alleged trespassing into Cambodia.

Deputy Premier Suthep, who supervises national security affairs, said that a bail request had not been filed to seek the temporary release of the seven 7 Thais and the matter depended on the decision of their Cambodian lawyers and the process of the Cambodian judiciary.

Asked for the possibility of a prisoner exchange, Suthep said the idea had not been discussed in details. It was mentioned in the past. Cambodia used to release its prisoners for Thailand but there are legal obstacles that block Thailand from doing so reciprocally. He insisted his government would try all possible means including negotiations and legal approaches to help the seven Thai detainees as soon as possible.

Suthep warned Thai people not to be emotional on the issue; otherwise, that could have negative impacts. He said that neighboring countries had to be patient and understand each other. His government is trying every legal means and it will discuss solutions to issues along the Thai-Cambodian border after finishing the case of the seven Thais.

The Thai deputy premier denied the press report in Cambodia that Thai soldiers shot 20 Cambodian people dead near the border in Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket province in northeastern Thailand. He said he did not know what motivated such a press report and that all parties should refrain from compounding bilateral issues but should help improve bilateral relations. He believes that bilateral relations remain good.

Meanwhile, Thai Supreme Commander Gen Songkitti Jaggabatara said that all government agencies were coordinating attempts to help the seven Thais. He also denied the report that Thai soldiers shot any Cambodians who accidentally entered Thai territory. (TNA)
