Ashton condemns Israeli plans for new settlement in E.Jerusalem
Berlin, Jan 10, IRNA -- European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton sharply condemned Israeli plans to build new settlements in East Jerusalem, reiterating this was in violation of international law.
'I strongly condemn this morning's demolition of the Shepherd Hotel and the planned construction of a new illegal settlement,' Ashton said in a statement released in Brussels.
'I reiterate that settlements are illegal under international law, undermine trust between the parties and constitute an obstacle to peace,' she added.
She reaffirmed that 'the EU does not recognize' the annexation of East Jerusalem by Israel, and also voiced 'concern by the recent upsurge of violence' in the occupied West Bank.
Ashton has repeatedly stressed that Tel Aviv's highly controversial settlement policies in Jerusalem and the West Bank are seriously jeopardizing a two-state solution./end
