Swimmers` close encounter with bull shark
A large bull shark has come within 25 metres of swimmers at a NSW south coast beach.
The lurking three-metre monster was spotted by a patrol plane off the beach just
north of Mollymook on Saturday afternoon, sparking the evacuation of the beach.
Lifesavers in an inflatable launch and a swooping Bendigo Bank Aerial Patrol
aircraft repelled the shark and the beach reopened shortly afterwards.
Bull sharks generally grow to 3.5 metres and have been known to attack humans.
A swimmer was also ordered out of the water later in the day at Hyams Beach, Jervis
Bay after a two-metre, unidentified shark was seen close to the beach.
Numerous other smaller sharks were spotted in the area by the patrol plane.
It is believed large schools of fish have attracted the sharks to the south coast
beaches.
