The Admiral Makarov icebreaker continues rescue of ice-stranded ships.

MOSCOW, January 9 (Itar-Tass) - The Admiral Makarov icebreaker
continues making a path for the ships stranded in the ice of the Sea of
Okhotsk. On Saturday, it started towing the Shore of Hope trawler out of
heavy ice, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Transport told
Itar-Tass.
Earlier, the Admiral Makarov towed the Professor Kizevetter research
vessel into an easily passable ice area and handed it over to the Magadan
icebreaker that piloted it to open waters.
The third ship, the Sodruzhestvo floating base, remains stranded in
the ice. Experts believe that it's going to be harder to take it out to
clear waters because it's hull is wider than that of an icebreaker. That
is why another icebreaker, the Krasin, has been sent to help the Admiral
Makarov to widen the canal for the ship's passage.

Two light cars, Lada-Kalina and Cherry, collided head on, leaving five

.Rescuers continue search for distressed schooner in Tatar Strait.

VLADIVOSTOK, the Far East, January 9 (Itar-Tass) - A search for the
missing Partner schooner will continue in the Tatar Strait on January 9.
The ship sent a distress signal 48 hours ago but hasn't yet been found.
Its crew consists of 14 Russian nationals.
The schooner is a tiny vessel with a displacement of 300 tons. The
search operation has been under way for two days. It involves two motor
vessels, the Pioneer of Kholmsk of the Sakhalin Shipping Company and the
Chelyabinsk of the Far Eastern shipping line. Three ground groups of
rescuers are searching through Sakhalin's western coast. Seventy-four
rescuers are taking part in the operation.
On Saturday, a Mi-8 helicopter flew over the strait for several hours
in hope of finding traces of the missing vessel. There were none.
However, the helicopter pilots didn't see any evidence of a shipwreck
either.
Alexander Savelyev, the head of the public relations centre of the
Federal Fishing Agency (Rosrybolovstvo), told Itar-Tass that the schooner
had sent a distress signal on January 7. The crew radioed: "It's the
Partner. We are in distress. The vessel is going under water. Our only
raft has opened in the wrong way". After that, the radio contact broke off
but the radio station in the port of Vanino got the SOS message. A rescue
operation started immediately.
According to the Federal Fishing Agency, the Partner schooner doesn't
have a GLONASS system, which makes the search even more complex. The
Partner radioed its SOS message from the Tatar Strait area, seven miles
northwest from the Lamanov Cape (Sakhalin's western coast).
Stormy weather has been reported in the rescue effort area: the
north-western winds with a speed of 15 meters per second, the sea waves
are 2.5 meters high, the air temperature is minus 18; it's hailing and the
visibility is about 540 meters.
The schooner's owning company is registered in Belize. The vessel
flies a Cambodian flag and its crew is Russian. The Japanese port
authorities report that the Partner left the port of Wakkanai in the
northern part of Hokkaido Island on January 5.
