Flooding in Thai southern Narathiwat province expands to 11 districts

NARATHIWAT, Jan 9 (TNA) - Flooding in Thailand’s southern border province of Narathiwat has expanded to 11 districts. Local people start to stock consumer goods as they fear that traders will take flooding as an opportunity to unfairly raise product prices again.
Clouds still cover all the 13 districts of Narathiwat province and there are sporadic rains in some areas. Consequently the three local rivers of Sungai Kolok, Bang Nara and Sai Buri overflow and flood villages and farmland in low areas. The flooding has expanded to 11 districts namely Sungai Kolok, Wang , Tak Bai, Cho Airong , Chanae, Ra-ngae, Sungai Padi, Yi Ngor, Ba Cho, Rueso and Muang districts.
Deepest floods are in Sungai Kolok district as their levels range from 60 to 130 centimeters especially in Hua Saphan community in Muang Sungai Kolok municipality.
Flood levels in other areas range from 40 to 60 centimeters. The situation affects 10,014 families or 38,446 people in 182 villages of the 11 districts. Floods hit over 9,000 rai or over 14 square kilometers of farmland, 67 main and minor roads and over 10 primary schools that will not resume classes tomorrow.
Concerned officials have evacuated over 450 people from their houses in Rangae, Wang and Sungai Kolok districts. The victims were brought to local relief centers in their respective districts. The situation prompts villagers to build up their stocks of dried foods and consumer goods as they have learned a lesson in the past flooding when traders unfairly raised their product prices by nearly 100 percent, citing the shortage of goods and difficult transportation as their excuses.
