Abhisit says 7 Thais did not intend to trespass on Cambodian soil
BANGKOK, Jan 9 (TNA) - Thai Prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva reiterated on Sunday that seven Thai nationals detained in Phnom Penh did not intend to trespass on Cambodian soil. He promised to do his best to bring them back to Thailand safely and confirmed the assistance would not affect the national sovereignty.
In his weekly talk programme Sunday morning Abhisit referred to the arrest of the seven Thais including Democrat MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth by Cambodian authorities allegedly for illegal immigration and trespass on a military compound.
The prime minister said the seven Thais did not have any intention to do the alleged offences but they were just verifying the complaint of Thai villagers who had land right documents but could not use their land. A complete video clip that was not edited showed that the seven people intended to see the land that was protected by land right documents and was part of Thailand. However, in their trip they were in another area and were thus arrested.
“When this happens, the government is duty-bound to help the seven Thais. It must work for their release and return to Thailand as soon as possible. During their detention, it will try its best to ensure their best living conditions,” Abhisit noted.
To help the seven Thai detainees, according to the Thai premier, his government would take the actions that would not affect the national sovereignty and in the meantime the government would not be reckless on other border issues.
Abhisit added that when the situation is relieved, the government will move on to solve those problems. But today he would like all Thai people to support attempts to bring the seven people back to the country safely.(TNA)
