Thai PM announces 9 public welfare measures as New Year gifts for Thais

BANGKOK, Jan 9 (TNA)- Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday announced nine public welfare measures as New Year gifts for Thai people. He said the measures will cost the government over 2 billion baht but their yields will exceed 20 billion baht.
Abhisit announced the measures under his “Pracha Wiwat” public welfare scheme in his weekly television programme live broadcast on state-run TV Channel 11 this morning. Concerned ministers were also present during the announcement of the measures aimed at helping people in troubles immediately.
The prime minister said that before the launch of the measures he had worked them out with over 70 officials from over 30 agencies for as long as five weeks. Their work resulted in what could be considered as nine New Year gifts for Thai people. He said the measures were structural solutions that were intended to ensure justice for people. They are not populist measures. The measures will cost only over 2 billion baht but will bring about benefits worth over 20 billion baht to the public.
The first gift will go to about 10 million people who have not been covered by the social security system. The government will amend relevant laws and regulations to allow each of the people to contribute up to 100 baht per month to the social security fund and in return they will be eligible for social security welfare. The measure will start this July.
As for the second New Year gift, the government will lend to the taxi drivers who have been in this career for over three years so that they can buy their own taxis. Their installments will be cheaper than their taxi rents. The government will also lend to street vendors.
As for the third New Year gift, the government will register taxi motorcyclists and give them special ID cards as well as welfare and privileges. It will improve their stands and install fare boards. It will spend over 10 million baht on improving taxi motorcycle services and the project will start in Bangkok this March.
The fourth New Year gift will go to street vendors. The government will give them more footpath space where they can sell their goods. The project should help as many as 20,000 street vendors who can consequently cut their expenses. The project will start in April.
The five other New Year gifts will concern costs of living. This July the government will stop subsidizing the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price for industries but will maintain the subsidy for households and the transportation sector. This will strengthen the government’s oil fund and the government will be able to cope better with rising oil prices.
The government will continue to waive electricity fees for the families that use lower than 90 units of electricity per month. This should benefit about 9.1 million families.
The government will control the prices of feeds and breeds in order to keep the prices of farm products and foods at affordable levels. The government will ensure fairness for consumers and give them more choices by revealing information about the costs of products. Besides, the government will address crime-prone areas to reduce crimes. It intends to cut the number of crimes in Bangkok by 20% in six months. He will ask the cabinet to approve all the nine New Year gifts this Tuesday and will set up a working group to ensure that people will really receive the gifts.(TNA)
