Salehi: Committee formed to follow up case of Asgari

Tehran, Jan 8, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Caretaker Ali Akbar Salehi said a committee has been formed to follow up the case of the abducted former defense ministry deputy, Ali Reza Asgari.

Salehi made the remarks Saturday morning after a meeting with the family of the kidnapped former Iranian official.

Stressing the need for urgent and frank follow ups to clarify Asghari’s fate, he said the Zionist regime has always been engaged in non-human and intrusive operations against Iran in the past three decades since the victory of the Islamic revolution in the country.

He referred to the abduction of four Iranian diplomats in Lebanon, assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists and also the abduction of Asgari as examples of such anti-Iran policies followed by the Zionist regime.

Saying that Iran will strongly confront such actions, Salehi said Iran will certainly follow up the case of Asgari most urgently because based on information leaked by the Zionists he is in Israeli jails.

Noting that a special committee has been formed in the Foreign Ministry to follow up the case of Asgari and other similar cases, he also said that Iran was working on the issue through international legal channels.

He said the International Red Crescent Committee has responded positively to the correspondence by Iran and has promised to frankly follow up the issue.

The Foreign Ministry caretaker further said that Iran has received good documentations regarding the fate of Asgari and hoped to get good legal results using them.

In answer to a question by IRNA, he said Iran’s recent invitation extended to international bodies and organizations to visit its nuclear facilities aimed at further transparency on Iran’s part regarding its peaceful nuclear activities.

Saying that Iran has in the past extended similar invitations as well, he stressed that the measure is a token of Iran’s good intentions but some are interpreting it as a plot just because they are thinking only of evil themselves.

As for the results of his recent visit to Iraq, he said his meetings with Iraqi officials including the president and prime minister were constructive.

He said he discussed such issues as terrorism, the Pejak grouplet and border issues with the Iraqi officials./end
