Thai South faces new flooding

BANGKOK, Jan 7 (TNA) - Many provinces in Thailand's southern region are facing new flooding caused by heavy downpours over the past days.

People in Phatthalung Province were taking turns to watch out for possible repeated landslides in areas at risk and preparing for any immediate evacuation as it was raining heavily there. In the meantime, flooding in the heart of Phatthalung is, however, receding.

In Pattani Province, overflowing Pattani River has flooded over 300 houses in Muang District. The inundations ranged from 60 to 100 centimeters deep and many flooded roads have become impassable.

In Narathiwat Province, flash floods from the Sankalakhiri mountain range caused the Sungai Kolok River to overflow and flood local communities and farmlands. Some 140 locals were evacuated from their Hua Saphan community in the Muang Sungai Kolok Municipality to safe grounds. Forty-five more people in Wang and Ra-ngae Districts were also brought to high grounds. A local ad hoc command in charge of coping with storms and mudslides has already declared eight districts in Narathiwat flood-stricken areas. (TNA)
