Authorities are trying hard to help seven Thai detainees in Cambodia, says army chief

BANGKOK, Jan 7 (TNA) - Thai Army-Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha insisted on Friday (Jan 7) that the government and the Royal Thai Army have been trying to assist seven Thai detainees in Cambodia, but the Thai authorities must respect the Cambodian judiciary and wait for its decision in the meantime.

General Prayuth affirmed that the Thai government and the Royal Thai Army have been determined to help the seven Thai nationals once informed of their arrest by Cambodian border soldiers last week. However, the Thai army chief acknowledged, as the border is so remote, the Thai authorities learned about the arrest after the seven Thai nationals had been sent to inner Cambodia.

The Thai army chief also called on anti-Cambodia protesters in Thailand to soften their stance, saying that neighboring countries need to show respect to each other and to refrain from mistrust, and that the priority now is to bring the seven Thai people back home safely.

Meanwhile, Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya made similar comments, saying that the Thai government has been trying to help the seven Thai nationals, but the Thai public need to wait for the Cambodian court's verdicts. Kasit revealed that he is waiting for updates from the Thai ambassador to Phnom Penh and he is doing his best to lobby for the release of the seven Thai people.

The Thai foreign minister, however, denied reports that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva phoned his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen, insisting that both leaders had not discussed the issue but other parties were, instead, trying to reach their contacts to help the seven Thai people. (TNA)
