Krasin icebreaker to help Admiral Makarov rescue ice-trapped ships
VLADIVOSTOK, January 7 (Itar-Tass) -- The Krasin icebreaker is
hurrying to help the Admiral Marakov icebreaker in her efforts to rescue
ships nipped in ice in the Sea of Okhotsk, the press service of the Far
Eastern Steamship Line said on Friday.
According to the press service, the Krasin is expected to reach the
Sakhalin Bay late on January 8.
The Krasin, one of the biggest icebreakers in Russia's Far East, is
capable of developing a speed of 19.5 knots. The 135-metre long vessel has
a displacement of 20,247 tons.
Late on January 6, the Admiral Makarov took the Professor Kisewetter
research vessel in tow to escort it to the Magadan icebreaker. As of 10:00
a.m. Vladivostok time (03:00 a.m. Moscow time) on January 7, the two
vessels have mastered 24 nautical miles. The tugging is proceeding in
extremely unfavorable weather conditions, with a visibility of three
nautical miles. It is snowing and winds are blowing in the northerly
direction.
The caravan has 13 nautical miles ahead. After it reaches the Magadan
icebreaker, the latter will take up further piloting of the Professor
Kisewetter, a 80-long former fishing trawler with the displacement of
3,000 tons, to ice-free water some 50-60 nautical miles off its current
location.
After the Professor Kisewetter is rescued from the ice trap, the
Admiral Makarov will head to rescue the Bereg Nadezhny refrigerating ship.
The next will be the Sodruzhetsvo floating factory stuck in the ice in the
Sakhalin Bay since December 30. The two stuck vessels have more than 150
metres in length. According to specialists, its will take bigger efforts
to rescue the Sodruzhestvo floating factory, since it is much wider than
the icebreakers and is unlikely to fit into a path broken in the ice by
only one icebreaker.
