Kazakh Senate supports referendum extending Nazarbayev`s office terms.

ASTANA, January 7 (Itar-Tass) -- The upper house of Kazakhstan's
parliament, or Senate, on Thursday voted in favour of the initiative to
hold a referendum on amending the country's constitution to extend the
office terms for incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
"We link all achievements of the present-day Kazakhstan with his name.
Over a short historical period, our country has become a successful state
with a developed market economy, which enjoys high authority in the world
community," said Senate speaker Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev.
The initiative was earlier supported by the lower house, the Mazhilis.
As of now, as many as 2 million and 590 signatures of the country's
residents have been collected in favour of such a referendum, while
200,000 signature are needed under law.
Nazarbayev has been ruling the country for 20 years. His office term
expires in 2012.


Two drug traffickers with 5 kilos of heroin detained in Tajikistan.

DUSHANBE, January 7 (Itar-Tass) -- Tajik drug police on Thursday
detained two drug traffickers with five kilograms of Afghan heroine
destined for Russia, a spokesman for the Tajik anti-drug authority
reported.
According to the spokesman, if sold inside Tajikistan the drugs might
have brought up to 20,000 U.S. dollars. In Russia, this much of heroine
would have been sold at a much higher price.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated on charges of large-scale
drug trafficking. Police are taking efforts to expose other persons who
might have been involved in this crime.
In all, Tajik drug police seized more than a ton of drugs, primarily
heroin and hashish, and neutralized five international organized crime
groups in 2010.

.25 people injured by pyrotechnic devices in Moscow.

MOSCOW, January 7 (Itar-Tass) -- As many as 25 people, including two
children aged three and 13, have been injured while making fireworks in
Moscow since December 31, a Russian Emergencies Ministry official said on
Thursday.
Of these 25, twenty two were hospitalised with burns, rough-edged
wounds, bruises, and fractures, said Sergei Anikeyev, a deputy head of the
ministry's supervision administration for Moscow.
A record-breaking number of 95 injured by fireworks was reported in
Moscow in 2007. In 2010, there were only 19 such cases.

.Admiral Makarov struggling to reach ice-free water.

VLADIVOSTOK, January 7 (Itar-Tass) -- The Admiral Makarov icebreaker
is currently struggling its way to escort the Professor Kisewetter
research vessel towards ice-free water in the Sea of Okhotsk, the press
service of the Far Eastern Steamship Line said on Friday.
According to the press service, the two ships have encountered a strip
of ice hardly penetrable even for the Admiral Makarov with its capacity of
36,000 horsepower. The ships have mastered only 24 miles since Thursday
night. The Admiral Makarov is virtually dragging the Professor Kisewetter,
with the latter's snout being tied to the icebreaker's stern with towing
cables. The caravan is heading towards the Magadan icebreaker, which is
currently staying in an area of loose ice. From here, the Magadan will
take up further piloting of the Professor Kisewetter, a 80-long former
fishing trawler with the displacement of 3,000 tons.
After the Professor Kisewetter is rescued from the ice trap, the
Admiral Makarov will head to rescue the Bereg Nadezhny refrigerating ship.
The next will be the Sodruzhetsvo floating factory stuck in the ice in the
Sakhalin Bay since December 30.
According to rescuers, yet another vessel, the Konstantin Bondarenko
tugboat, is dead in the water in the Sea of Okhotsk after a 32-millimeter
steel cable has twisted around her propeller-rudder system. The Irbis
rescue ship is some 100 miles of the Konstantin Bondarenko.

.Two tankers defeat pirate attacks in Arabian Sea.

VLADIVOSTOK, January 7 (Itar-Tass) -- Two tankers, the Front Warrior
flying the Bahaman flag and the Norwegian-flagged Austria, defeated pirate
attacks in the Arabian Sea on January 6, the press service of the European
Naval Force reported.
According to the press service, the MV Front Warrior oil tanker was
attacked approximately 300 nautical miles southeast of Muscat. Rocket
propelled grenades were fired at the vessel from 1 skiff in order to
attempt a boarding. The ship's crew used fire hoses to deter the pirates
as well as razor wire on the perimeter. These measures combined with
additional watch keepers prevented the vessel from being boarded. The
269-metre long vessel is now safe.
The 226-metre long MV BW Austria LPG tanker was attacked some 320
nautical miles southeast of Muscat. The vessel was also fired upon with
RPGs from 2 skiffs. She maintained her heading at full speed and had been
equipped with razor wire around her perimeter. These measures prevented
the pirates from boarding and the vessel is now safe.
