Elephant tusks seized at THAI warehouse

BANGKOK, Jan 6 (TNA) - Thai Customs officials have seized tusks of endangered African elephants, weighing 435 kilograms and worth some 10 million baht, from a warehouse of Thai Airways International or THAI, the national flag carrier.
Prayong Phumthanet, Director-General of Thailand's Customs Department, announced the seizure of the 69 tusks and four smaller pieces of the ivory today, saying that the Thai customs officials found the smuggled items hidden in a container shipped from Mozambique and destined for Laos yesterday (Jan 5)--declared as personal appliances to fool the customs authorities.
The Thai Customs Department considers the cargoes to have been smuggled into the Kingdom with a false declaration, violating the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The seizure resulted from a tip-off provided by a CITES-related network indicating that Thailand might be a transit point for the elephant tusks from Mozambique. No arrest has yet been made, as nobody has claimed the shipment. (TNA)
