NKorea people support tasks set out in Jan 1 editorial

PYONGYANG, January 6 (Itar-Tass) - Public meetings have been held in
all regions of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in support
of the tasks set in a joint editorial published on January 1 by the
republic's three central newspapers -- Rodong Shinmun, Choson Inmingun,
and Chonnen Chonvi. The newspapers set out basic orientations for the
country's development.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday that such
meetings had been held Wednesday in Phyonan-Pukto, Phyonan-Namdo, and
Hwanghe-Namdo provinces and a number of other ones.
Representatives of Party organizations and work collectives speaking
at the meetings called for stepping up the production of grain "in
accordance with the precepts of the Workers Party of Korea (WPK) about a
fundamental change in the development of agriculture", and for giving
greater scope to housing construction.
Speakers also pointed out the need for an all-round development of the
light industry with a view to turning out diverse high-quality products
for the population on a large scale.
A mass meeting and a demonstration in support of the WPK policy took
place in Pyongyang on January 3. In KCNA estimate, about 100,000 people
gathered in the square named after DPRK founder Kim IL Sung.
The three newspapers' joint editorial, which is viewed as a keynote
one, pointed out that the chief goal of the DPRK is "to build a great,
mighty and prosperous country in the interests of raising the living
standards of the population".
This is why, the newspapers believe, "it is essential first of all to
bring about a leading-edge development of the light industry," which is to
be given paramount attention this year. At the same time the country will
make efforts to develop the coal and metallurgical industries, the energy
sector, and the transport system "on the strength of the principle of the
country's reliance on its own resources".
