Thai vendors complain about expensive palm oil

BANGKOK, Jan 5 (TNA) - Thai vendors have called on the government to solve the all-time high price of palm oil.
A survey found a smaller amount of palm oil was available at the Huay Khwang fresh market in Bangkok on Wednesday (Jan 5). It was even absent at some stalls and its price had risen from 48 baht per kilogram yesterday, to 52-55 baht per kilogram today.
A grocer said the price of palm oil was at an historic high. The grocer added vendors and consumers would not be able to afford it if the price continued to rise. The grocer urged the government to solve the problem by importing palm oil.
Another grocer said the shortage of palm oil had continued for over a month and retail stores are limiting the amount of palm oil sold to each buyer.
Apart from the price of palm oil, the prices of some other consumer goods were also soaring. This included coconut, which has risen to 55-60 baht per kilogram. Vendors are calling for government help as the increasing salaries of government officials, do not cover the rising prices of consumer goods.
Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai suddenly postponed today’s meeting of a sub-committee supervising the price of vegetable oil. She will wait for the National Oil Palm Policy Committee, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, to meet tomorrow. The committee is expected to approve the import of 50,000 tons of raw palm oil from Malaysia in the next three months. In the meantime, inspectors of the Department of Internal Trade are surveying palm oil stocks at local factories, in a bid to solve the shortage. (TNA)
